Getting The Most Out Of Your Winter Plants
Survival How-To
For root plants, harvest young plants sporadically to make room for the remaining plants to grow. Giving your root crop more space will result in larger healthier plants as well as allowing you multiple harvest on the same crop.
Green Onions can be harvested and replanted several times through out the winter. Simply harvest your green onions, cut the green tops from the plant for use in cooking (these tops freeze and keep very well), then replant the bulb. The bulb will grow new green tops at which point you can repeat the process.
By using heirloom plants, you can save you own seeds, and intern, lots of money. All you have to do is plant a little extra, pick the healthiest plants, let them reach maturity, then dry their seeds or bulbs, and store until nest year.
